Choosing a Provider

Learn about types of primary care providers

When you choose Mary Bridge Children’s Primary Care, feel assured your child is receiving care from experts with special training in the physical, emotional and social development of children and teens.

Each of our pediatric primary care locations offers care from pediatricians and advanced registered nurse practitioners, and in some cases, physician assistants.

You can learn more about our primary care providers in the directory.

Pediatricians (MD)

Medical doctors (MDs) who have special training and board certification to provide general care for babies, kids and teens are called pediatricians. They provide well-child exams and immunizations, as well as treat common childhood illnesses. MDs will refer a patient to a pediatric specialist for anything more serious and beyond general care. MDs are great listeners and are good at explaining medical concepts in a way that’s easy to understand.

Pediatricians (DO)

Doctors of osteopathic medicine, or DOs, are licensed physicians who practice in all areas of medicine and may specialize in pediatrics. They focus on a whole-person approach to treatment and care. DOs focus on prevention and emphasize how lifestyle and environment can impact overall well-being. DOs also receive special training in the musculoskeletal system — the body’s interconnected system of nerves, muscles and bones.

Advanced registered nurse practitioners (ARNP)

ARNPs have an advanced degree and board certification in a specialty, such as pediatrics or adolescent medicine. They examine patients and establish diagnoses; perform and interpret diagnostic tests; prescribe medications and therapies when necessary; and develop plans of care.

Physician assistants (PA or PA-C)

Physician assistants are health care professionals who practice medicine as part of a health care team with collaborating physicians and other providers. They are experts in general medicine and can diagnose, treat and prescribe medicine.
