Mary Bridge receives $100,000 grant for cancer research
This week, Hyundai Hope on Wheels presented Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Center with a $100,000 Hyundai Impact Award to support pediatric cancer research.
For 20 years, Hyundai’s Hope On Wheels has been providing grant funding to support pediatric cancer research and awareness. They’ve given over $145 million in grants to pediatric oncology departments at select children’s hospitals all around the country, and this year marks the second grant awarded to Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Network. Mary Bridge has now received a total of $150,000 in grants from Hope On Wheels since 2015.
“Throughout the country, talented doctors are working tirelessly to help kids fight cancer by conducting research or providing bedside care,” said Scott Fink, chairman for the Hyundai Hope On Wheels Board of Directors. “Our goal at Hope On Wheels is to provide these doctors with the grant funds they need to perform their lifesaving work.”
To commemorate the award, Mary Bridge and Hyundai hosted their signature Handprint Ceremony event on Tuesday morning at the Mary Bridge Health Center. Pediatric oncology patients painted their hands and left handprints on a white lab coat presented to Becky Johnson, MD, and on a white Hyundai Santé Fe.
Dr. Johnson was the recipient of this year’s award and is excited to continue her oncology research with the help of the Hyundai grant.
“Young adults with cancer are an underserved population – they tend to fall through the cracks in the system. This contribution will allow them to not only survive, but to thrive,” Dr. Johnson says.
Thirteen-year-old pediatric cancer survivor and 2018 Hope On Wheels Ambassador Carter Gates offered some words of wisdom to other young patients in the audience:
“Attitude is everything,” he says. “No matter how hard treatment is, having a positive attitude makes everything easier.”
