Get to know us: Jacob Henderson, MD
This is part of a new blog series introducing the many dedicated experts who provide care in a wide variety of medical specialties at Mary Bridge Children’s Hospital & Health Network. To find a provider, visit marybridge.org/providers.
Meet Jacob Henderson, MD, one of our incredible physicians in the hematology-oncology clinic in Tacoma. He’s been part of the Mary Bridge Children’s family for three years.
Dr. Henderson received his medical training from the University of Washington and completed his pediatric residency at University of California Davis. He did his fellowship and post-doctoral training in pediatric hematology-oncology at Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).
Dr. Henderson treats all types of pediatric cancer and blood disorders and has a special clinical interest — and additional training — in treating pediatric brain tumors.
We caught up with Dr. Henderson and asked him some nonmedical questions.
What is your favorite way to lighten the mood with patients and families?
I’m famous (or infamous) for my animal facts. Did you know that elephants never get cancer?
What is something you’d like every one of your patients to know?
That I genuinely care — deeply — about each of my patients and I want them to know that I will do absolutely everything and anything I can to give them the best possible outcome.
Kids love Disney! What is your favorite Disney character?
Moana.
Kids also love treats. What is your favorite treat?
Popcorn … with extra butter and salt.
Mary Bridge Children’s providers are already superheroes, but if you could have one special superpower, what would it be?
I wish I could magically take away any fear or anxiety my patients and their families might have.
What is the most rewarding part of your job?
Getting to know my patients and their families over the months or years of treatment.
Do you have hobbies outside of work?
I love being outside … rock climbing, skiing, sea kayaking, fly fishing, sailing and hiking. I also enjoy cooking, especially fresh Pacific Northwest food. Spending time with close friends and family is really what gives me joy.
What is your Mary Bridge “why”?
I had the opportunity to do some work at Mary Bridge during my post-doc training. I’d never worked with such a kind, motivated and thoughtful group of people — including the doctors, nurses, navigators, social workers, pharmacists and other staff. There isn’t a group I could be more thrilled and honored to work with.
