Aural Habilitation is specialized intervention for children with hearing loss that focuses on providing therapy to maximize each child’s communication abilities.
At the Mary Bridge Pediatric Speech and Hearing Clinic we provide comprehensive, family-centered care for children who are deaf and hard-of-hearing, supporting communication development with an auditory-oral approach. The auditory-oral approach to intervention focuses on communication development through listening and spoken language using hearing aids and/or cochlear implants. This approach emphasizes the use of residual hearing through appropriate amplification devices. The main objective is to enhance listening skills for the use of improved communication.
Clinicians at Mary Bridge are specially trained to provide Aural Habilitation therapy, using the auditory-oral approach. We work in collaboration with the Mary Bridge Audiology Department and the regional cochlear implant centers to ensure the best possible care for these children.
Scope of Service
- Children with moderate to profound hearing loss in both ears
- Children as young as 3 months through school age
- Children whose parents want their children to listen and talk and are interested in the auditory-oral approach to therapy.
We are not currently working with children who are ASL signers or who use sign language as their primary mode of communication.
Referrals are considered on a case-by-case basis.
