Synagis Injections

Synagis (palivizumab) injections can help prevent RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) infections in babies at risk. RSV infections are a respiratory virus that can occur in babies, especially during the fall and winter seasons.

It usually causes only mild cold-like symptoms in older children and adults, but can make premature babies and those with certain heart or lung disease very sick. Synagis injections are given once per month during the RSV season, usually between December and April. We give Syangis injections to babies based on the American Academy of Pediatrics guidelines.

Babies with the following are eligible:

• Infants less than 12 months of age at the beginning of RSV season who were born at 32 weeks or less
• Children 24 months or less with certain significant heart or lung disease
• Children 24 months or less who are at risk for infection (i.e. receiving chemotherapy or organ transplant during the RSV season)
